Ambassador’s Greetings

2022/11/30
My name is Yoshio Yamawaki and I am the newly appointed Ambassador of Japan to Cyprus.

Cyprus is called the island of the sun in the Mediterranean Sea and is full of beautiful beaches and nature. It is also known as a country with 11,000 years of history and diverse culture and traditions.

The year 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Cyprus. The two countries have enjoyed a long friendship since shortly after Cyprus gained independence. I am very happy and honored to be assigned to such a beautiful and important country.

Japan and Cyprus have many in common. Both are island nations surrounded by the sea and maintain thriving shipping industries. Cyprus has mountains over 2,000m high, and in Japan too, many mountains, including Mt. Fuji, occupy three-fourths of the country. Both countries are located at the ends of the Eurasian Continent, Japan at the eastern end and Cyprus at the western, and share the same latitude.

Blessed with nature, both countries are famous for their delicious cuisine. Washoku, Japanese cuisine is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is popular all over the world. I hear that Cyprus has wonderful cuisine that makes the most of the riches of the Mediterranean Sea, and olives and fruits that have been blessed by the sun. I can't wait to taste it.

On the other hand, Japan and Cyprus each have their own characteristics and different elements. Cyprus has a long history of intermingling of various civilizations and has created its interesting culture as a result. Japan is also a country with a long history and its own wonderful unique culture.

I would like to make the most of our two countries' commonalities to deepen mutual friendship, create a relationship where we can get to know each other's unique cultures more deeply in order to advance the bilateral exchanges between Japan and Cyprus. Our bilateral cooperation has progressed since the Embassy of Japan in Cyprus was opened in January 2018. One of the good examples is the creation of the Sakura Park in Kambos Village, Cyprus, in 2022.

However, I think there is still room for improvement in terms of people-to-people exchanges and business cooperation. In Japan, I have been involved in government administration in the fields of science, technology, innovation, education, culture and sports. I would like to make use of this experience to further strengthen exchanges in areas such as science and technology, education and culture and business cooperation as well. I will do my utmost to promote friendship and goodwill between Japan and Cyprus in each area.

I would also like to increase the awareness of and familiarity with Japan in Cyprus and that of Cyprus in Japan.
I would greatly appreciate your continuous support.

Yoshio YAMAWAKI
Ambassador of Japan to Cyprus
